Since March 14, when the #LOTdoDomu operation started, more than 8,500 Polish nationals were transported back to Poland. 56 flights have been operated from dozens of destinations around the globe. Further Special flights are planned in the upcoming days. The aim is to bring to the country those who, due to the spread of coronavirus and the suspension of both air and rail traffic, have not been able to return home on a regular basis. This rescue action has no precedent in the history of LOT Polish Airlines.
#LOTdoDomu is a non-commercial operation. It has been started in co-operation with the Polish government, with an aim to support those Poles who remain far from their homes and families. This is an exceptional situation, and to help Polish citizens is the national carrier’s duty. LOT takes onboard passengers from various countries and does its best to fly wherever Poles have no other way to get out and come back home.
“We are focusing all our forces on organizing the rescue operation for our compatriots who have remained abroad. We do our best to bring back the largest possible number of Polish nationals as soon as we can. This is being done in a situation when more and more countries are closing their borders because of the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus,” Maciej Wilk, LOT Board Member & COO, explained. “Following the suspension of air traffic, as many as several thousand Polish nationals might have been not able to return home. That is why #LOTdoDomu is a unique operation of such a scale, with no precedent in the history of our airlines.”
LOT Polish Airlines is organizing special charter flights to various regions around the globe, in order to repatriate Polish nationals. Additional flights are also being planned from such countries like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, and the United States, based on the estimates of the number of Poles that are returning from these destinations.
“The #LOTdoDomu operation is currently the only way to enable thousands of Polish nationals who have remained abroad to return home. It is a huge challenge to make this operation happen, not only because many countries have closed their airspace, but also due to the fact that we are rescuing our compatriots also from those airports which are not our regular destinations. This requires a tremendous commitment of diplomatic services, obtaining numerous approvals and providing full technical support. I wish to thank the entire LOT crew for being part of this extremely important, challenging and globally unprecedented operation,” Captain Tadeusz Wrona, LOT Polish Airlines pilot, said.
All Polish nationals who wish to return to the country may register their request for flight at the websites: LOTdoDomu.com and LOTdoDomu.pl.
“We launched the operation on March 14, and until today we have transported back to Poland more than 8,500 Polish nationals. 56 flights have been operated from dozens destinations around the globe, including Amman, Athens, Chicago, Delhi, Dublin, Lisbon, London, New York, Reykjavik, Istanbul, and Tbilisi. In the upcoming days we are planning further rescue operations, which we will communicate to the public,” Maciej Wilk added.
Epidemiological safety is a priority. All travelers returning to Poland under the #LOTtoDomu operation have their body temperature checked and are subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
